We are expanding the Wild Animals Rescue Center to provide the best possible care for lions, tigers, and other predators who have suffered from the horrors of war. This center will help them recover from the stress and trauma they have experienced.

Shelling, Explosions, Hopelessness: Realities of War for Captive Predators

Wild Animals Rescue Center by Natalia Popova & UAnimals provides temporary shelter and medical treatment for animals. We rescue them from the hottest spots in Donetsk and Luhansk. Prior to the war, they were kept in captivity, either privately owned or in zoos, and then abandoned in cramped cages during explosions. Military personnel often ask us to save the helpless predators they find.

“Something is flying towards us, we hear a whistle and think ‘this is it.’ Then it explodes somewhere very close by, but we keep loading the lion into the car,” recalls our colleague from the evacuation team, Olena Bila.

War-Injured Animals Deserve Decent Rehabilitation Conditions

We plan to build a complex of 10 open-air enclosures of different sizes. These enclosures are designed for large predators such as lions, tigers, leopards, etc. In addition, each enclosure will have a shelter for the animal to sleep and rest during winter. We will also install a heating and lighting system in the enclosures and renovate the utility room.

Currently, there are 36 wild animals living at the Rescue Center, including 11 lions, 3 tigers, and a leopard. During the organization’s existence, we have taken care of approximately 600 animals, including bears, lions, leopards, tigers, monkeys, deer, elk, horses, donkeys, camels, foxes, raccoons, raccoon dogs, hyenas, hedgehogs, porcupines, peacocks etc.

FAQ

For some, the ability to afford an expensive exotic "kitty" is a status symbol. For the same reason, people give big cats as gifts to their influential friends. Additionally, people may not realize how harmful it is for these predators to live outside of the wild.

Because domestic conditions do not meet their needs. Living in a small cage in a backyard or even an apartment, predators do not have the opportunity to move enough and live a natural lifestyle, which leads to problems with excess weight, muscle tone, and overall health. For example, lions in the wild live and hunt in a territory of 50 km².

It varies. It depends on the condition of the animal and the speed of bureaucratic procedures for its relocation abroad.

Because the Center is not funded by the state or any commercial organization on a permanent basis. The Center's activity is possible solely due to donations from concerned people and partners.

After providing the necessary help and treatment to the animal, we release it into the wild if possible, or find it a new permanent home, usually in rehabilitation centers abroad.

Because they need to be in a sufficiently healthy and stable condition to undertake a long journey. Most animals that end up at the Center are so sick or injured that they may not survive the trip. Moreover, relocation abroad is a bureaucratic issue that takes time to resolve.
